 Bulls imply "manades" (bull-rearing ranches). It is here that are raised the bulls which the "razeteurs" will face in the "courses camarguaises" Mounted on their tireless pale grey Camargue horses, the "gardians" watch over these muscular athletes (the bulls), riding alongside them over the vast plain. But the "manades", with their "ferrades" (branding of calves), horse-riding, traditional meals and festivals, accompanied by gypsy music, are also centres welcoming towndwellers in search of open spaces, sea breezes and authenticity. At Beaucaire "Terre d'Argence", the "Fé di Biou" or love of bulls, is no lukewarm passion. It is a passion which possesses the locals body and soul. During the "courses camarguaises" (bull running), the stands of the arenas are always full. Before an admiring crowd, the white-clad "razeteurs" (bull runners) brave the fury of the wild bulls as they attempt to snatch the cockades and tassels attached to the bulls' horns. The "encierro" offers the exhilarating spectacle of bulls allowed to run free in town and village streets. The "abrivado" involves mounted "gardians" galloping a group of bulls through the streets, while intrepid spectators attempt to disrupt them. It is undoubtedly these taurine sports which incarnate the free, wild spirit of Terre d'Argence.
