Beaucaire's strategic position on the Rhone has long made it a highly important fresh water port for commercial trade. Each year, from the 15th to the 18th centuries, countless ships docked on the banks of the Rhone, to ply their goods at the famous "Madeleine Fair". Since the early 19th century, the Canal du Midi has extended from Beaucaire to Sète, giving new life to the port for the transportation of goods inland from the Mediterraneann to the north and the west.

This aqueduct, built at the end of the first century, very probably provided water for Arles. The pipe that was buried several kilometres below the ground has been reasonably well conserved. The section that has been dug up, which had been protected by the structure, will be part of an exhibition on “the history of water in Bellegarde".

Wherever he goes, wherever he looks, the traveller in Terre d’Argence discovers the glorious witnesses to a history over two thousand years old. From Roman times to those of the Counts of Toulouse in the Middle Ages, and beyond to the extravagances of the 18th century, the jewels of the patrimony of Terre d’Argence , spanning the centuries, await those who wish to discover them.  Churches and castles, bourgeois houses and ancestral farms, bridges and mills, ancient roads and waterways, as if by magic one encounters the past round every corner of this fascinating land.

Beauty in History,
artistic splendour

Isolated, set a little back from the road, this chapel invites the passer-by to rest in the shade of its walls.  Built in the 12th century, in the Carolingian era, two milestones taken from the Domitian Way, and dating from the reign of the Emperor Claudius, were used to support its vault. A Byzantine cross, found nearby, is mounted over the main entrance.  The chapel is deservedly classified as a Historic Monument.

the Roman wines

Speciality of the "Mas des Tourelles" in Beaucaire, the "Roman" wines are prepared according to methods used by the Romans, following ancient texts left by famous Latin agronomists such as Pliny the Elder, Lucius Columelle, Palladius…Honey, plants, spices, quince, sea water and many other and often surprising ingredients go into the making of these dry and sweet wines, providing them with powerful flavor and great, unique character.
